Award Category 3 – Public Open Spaces

Public open spaces are areas where everyone has the right to visit without being excluded. Open spaces are important as they provide places for people to meet, socialise, play and connect.

Applicants are encouraged to apply with examples including (but not limited to):

  • Recreation Spaces – those providing a setting for informal play and physical activity, relaxation and social interaction. This could be gardens and open parklands, community gardens, corridor links, amenity spaces, civic commons or playgrounds
  • Sport Spaces – those that provide a setting for formal structured sporting activities, such as ovals, sport courts or greens
  • Nature Spaces – those that provide opportunity for low-impact recreational activities, such as walking, cycling, picnicking, playing, watching or exploring natural features. This may include bushland, coastal areas, wetlands and riparian habitats, and geological and natural features. Sites are managed to enable recreational access while protecting local ecological and biodiversity values.
